BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Sophomore right-hander Chelsea Wilkinson has been named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, it was announced today by the league office. It is the first honor weekly honor for Wilkinson and the second time a Georgia player has been awarded a weekly honor this season. It also marks the first time since 2010 that a Georgia pitcher has earned SEC Pitcher of the Week honors.
Wilkinson went 2-0 with a pair of complete-game wins as Georgia swept No. 10/11 Kentucky in the final regular season series of the season. She struck out 18 batters and walked just three batters in 14 innings in the circle for the Bulldogs. Her two wins ran her record to 26-7 on the year, putting her in a tie for the most wins by an SEC pitcher this season. She now has 28 complete game performances this season.
The Taylorsville, North Carolina native was the only SEC pitcher to pick up two wins over a ranked team last week, while her 18 strikeouts over 14 innings were the most by an SEC pitcher last week. She allowed just one run on four hits and struck out ten batters in her complete game performance in Georgia's 4-1 win over Kentucky on Friday. On Sunday she allowed just one run on three hits and two walks while striking out eight Wildcat batters in her second complete game effort over the weekend.
Wilkinson leads the SEC in strikeouts and innings pitched. She also leads the Bulldogs in ERA (2.14), strikeouts (234), opponent batting average (.188), innings pitched (199.2) and saves (3).
Wilkinson and the Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, May 8 at 4 p.m., when they take on Florida in the SEC Tournament in Columbia, South Carolina.
