Quick Notes
Wilkinson Strikeouts: Since coming in as relief in the second game of the series at South Carolina, Chelsea Wilkinson has started five games and owns a 2-1 record. The freshman retired the final 14 batters she faced in the series-winning victory over the Gamecocks and has recorded 31 strikeouts in 23.2 innings of work. Among those strikeouts was a career-best 12 in game one against Texas A&M.
Griffin in the Leadoff: Since moving to the leadoff spot last Wednesday against USC Upstate, Niaja Griffin has raised her batting average 34 points. Last week she hit .500 and scored five runs for the Bulldogs. In Georgia's 12-7 win over Texas A&M, she found a way on base in four of her five plate appearances. In the five games since moving to the leadoff position, Griffin is hitting .400 with eight hits and seven runs scored and is riding a five-game hit streak.
Small Ball: Despite being known as power hitting team, the Bulldogs proved that they could play small ball in the series finale against Texas A&M. Trailing 2-1 going into the bottom of the second, the Bulldogs got two runs to retake the lead at 3-2 without any ball leaving the infield. Tess Sito led off the frame with a bunt single and stole second before Anna Swafford drew a walk. A sacrifice bunt by Katie Browne moved both runners into scoring position. Samantha LaZear then laid down a perfect bunt to the first base side that allowed Sito to score the tying run and Swafford move to third. Griffin followed with a bunt single that scored Swafford for the go ahead run that made it a 3-2 game. The Bulldogs went on to win the game 6-3.
Olney Delivers: Christine Olney continues to swing a hot bat for the Dawgs this season. The senior came on to pitch hit twice in three-game series against Texas A&M, delivering a key RBI hit in both occasions. Olney delivered a two-run single that allowed the Bulldogs to pull within one of the Aggies in the second game of the weekend, before hitting a RBI-single in the final game that helped Georgia to a 6-3 win. Olney is hitting .571 in pinch-hit situations this season.
On Deck: The Bulldogs will play their final series of the regular season when they return to Jack Turner Stadium next weekend, May 3-5, to take on the No. 12 LSU Tigers.
