OKLAHOMA CITY - University of Georgia senior Alisa Goler has been named a Top 25 Finalist for the 2011 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award according to an announcement made by the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) on Wednesday.
The USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award is touted by the ASA as the most prestigious honor in Division I women's collegiate softball and is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Past winners of this award include UCLA's Stacey Nuveman, Florida State's Jessica Van der Linden, three-time winner Texas pitcher Cat Osterman, Tennessee's Monica Abbott, Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher and two-time winner Washington's Danielle Lawrie.
The 2011 Top 25 list represents 17 schools and six different NCAA Division I Conferences. The list is comprised of nine seniors, six juniors, nine sophomores and one freshman. The 2011 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year will be chosen from the 25 finalists. Just days before the start of post-season play, a list of 10 finalists will be named and released on May 11. The three finalists will be announced May 25th while the winner of the 2011 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced prior to the start of the 2011 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
Goler, an infielder from Frankfort, Ill., is currently batting .404 with 15 home runs, 30 runs, 48 RBI and 42 walks this season. In Southeastern Conference action, Goler is batting a team-best .422 with 10 home runs, 24 RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.156. Goler has established or matched several new career records at Georgia this season including home runs (57), walks (162), tied sacrifice flies (12), walk-to-strikeout ratio (3.52) and toughest to strikeout (0.073 strikeouts per bat). Additionally, Goler stands poised to establish new records for RBI and extra-base hits as well. She currently has 226 RBI and the UGA record stands at 233 (Kim Wendland, 2002-05), and she has tallied 109 career extra-base hits, just one shy of Wendland's record of 110. Goler also ranks second in program history in on-base percentage at .501, trailing only senior teammate Taylor Schlopy's .507 mark.
Goler and the fourth-ranked Bulldogs will be in action tonight at in-state rival and 22nd-ranked Georgia Tech. First pitch at Mewborn Field is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
