ATHENS, Ga. – Alex Hugo has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week, it was announced today by the league office. It is the first SEC weekly honor for Hugo and the second time this season that a Georgia player has been named the SEC Player of the Week.
Hugo led the No. 15/17 Georgia softball team to a 4-0 record last week, including a sweep of Mississippi State over the weekend. She went 7-fo-13 at the plate for a batting average of .538. On Friday, she scored the game’s lone run when she belted a solo home run off the scoreboard.
Hugo delivered a walk-off home run in each of the next two games to seal the series sweep for the Bulldogs. She delivered a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning in the second game of the series against Mississippi State. With the bases loaded and one out, Hugo came to the plate and hit a towering home run over the right centerfield wall for a walk-off grand slam that gave the Bulldogs the 11-2 win.
In the second game of the day, and the third of the series, Hugo again was the hero, leading off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run that sealed the 9-1 win and the SEC series sweep.
With her three home runs last weekend, she became the first Georgia player to reach double-digit home runs with 11. She also leads the Bulldogs in home runs RBI and slugging percentage. She also leads the SEC in home runs and is one of just three players to have hit double-digit home runs this season.
