LEXINGTON, Ky. - The No. 10/11 University of Georgia softball team dropped a 4-0 decision to the Kentucky Wildcats in the second game of a three-game series. With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 33-10 overall and 11-7 in Southeastern Conference action. Kentucky improves to 21-22 on the season and 8-8 in the SEC.
Morgan Montemayor drops to 9-5 on the season with the loss. She allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out six in six innings in the circle. Kentucky's Lauren Cumbess got to win to move to 3-4 on the season. Cumbess threw a no hitter and did not allow a run, struck out seven and walked three.
Kentucky took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first on one hit and two errors. Cervantes led off with a single followed by an error that put Kara Dill at first. A walk loaded the bases, but Gracie Goulder made a decisive throw home to get the lead runner out on a fielder's choice. With the bases still loaded and two away, a second Georgia error and a hit batsman scored two runs for Kentucky.
The Wildcats added a pair of runs in the home half of the second inning. The first run came on a home run to left field by Brittany Cervantes to put UK up 3-0. Rachel Riley and Kara Dill followed with a double to shallow right and an infield single that put runners at the corners. Ginny Carroll drove in Dill with a double that extended Kentucky's lead to 4-0.
Anna Swafford became Georgia's first base runner of the game when she was hit by a pitch. She was left stranded as the next three batters went down in order.
The Bulldogs had a chance in the top of the fourth, as Kristyn Sandberg led off the inning with a walk. She moved to third on a passed ball and an error that put Brittney Hubbard at first. Georgia was unable to push Sandberg across home plate, as the final batter was retired.
Georgia and Kentucky will play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. In addition to the internet broadcast, the game will be broadcast locally on Newstalk 1340 WGAU beginning at 12:50 p.m.
