ATHENS, Ga.--The No. 9 University of Georgia softball team fell in Sunday's rubber match to No. 4 Florida 6-3 at Jack Turner Stadium. With the series loss, Georgia is now 29-7 on the season and 8-4 in the SEC while Florida improves to 31-4 overall and 12-2 in conference play.
Junior Tess Sito (7-1) took the loss after giving up two runs on four hits in one inning of work. Sophomore Morgan Montemayor got the starting nod, as she allowed two runs on three hits while senior Erin Arevalo closed the game and gave up two runs on four hits and struck out four in three innings of time in the circle.
Florida's Hannah Rogers (17-2) earned the win after giving up three runs, one earned, on five hits while striking out eight batters in a complete game.
Georgia opened the game with a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Senior Kristyn Sandberg put a single to right field before an error on Sito's hit to right field allowed Sandberg to score. The Bulldogs then added a run in the third, as senior Ashley Razey notched a RBI double to left to score senior Ashley Pauly.
Florida then responded in the top of the fourth with back-to-back home runs from Cheyenne Coyle and Lauren Haeger to open the inning and tie the game at 2. Two outs later, Ensley Gammel popped one over the left field wall to put Florida ahead 3-2.
Each team added a run in the fifth, as Florida's Michelle Moultrie scored on Coyle's double after walking and advancing to second on a bunt from Sami Fagan. Georgia closed the Gator's lead to 4-3 in the bottom frame with a fielder's choice from Sandberg bringing in Wilson from home.
The Gators sealed the win in the sixth inning off of S. Fagan's two-out two-RBI double to center field that scored Kasey Fagan and Moultrie.
Georgia travels to Knoxville, Tenn., on Wednesday, April 4 for a doubleheader against Tennessee starting at 5 p.m. The games will be featured on CSS.
