GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Third-ranked Georgia completed a Southeastern Conference series sweep over second-ranked Florida with a 5-1 victory in the series finale Sunday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,539.
With the sweep, Georgia improved to 27-4 overall and 8-3 in SEC action. Florida, who had not lost at home this year prior to this weekend, falls to 30-4 on the year and 7-3 in league play.
Freshman Morgan Montemayor notched her second win over the Gators in as many days by working a complete game allowing just one run on three hits to improve to 13-2. Florida's Hannah Rogers returned from a suspension and suffered just her second loss of the year to fall to 16-2. Rogers had allowed only six earned runs in 96.2 innings prior to the Bulldogs plating five on Sunday.
All five of those runs by Georgia came with two outs, and for the series, the Bulldogs scored 20-of-28 runs with two outs. Georgia scored at least five runs in each contest with 10 runs in game one and 13 runs in game two, and Florida had only allowed five runs in just one previous contest (Texas, Feb. 24).
Georgia notched its first run in the opening inning on Sunday. Senior Taylor Schlopy led off with a single through the left side, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a single from senior Brianna Hesson.
In the fourth, the Bulldogs extended the lead to 3-0. With two runs aboard after senior Alisa Goler and junior Kristyn Sandberg both recorded singles, junior Brittney Hubbard drilled a ball off of the right center wall to score two runs.
The final two runs of the weekend for Georgia came in the fifth off the bat of Goler, who crushed her team-leading 11th home run of the year. Junior Ashley Pauly was aboard for the long ball after leading the inning off with a single to left.
Florida's loan run of the day was scored in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run to center from Megan Bush.
Up next, Georgia opens a 10-game home stand at Jack Turner Stadium against in-state rival Georgia Tech on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. ET.
