Georgia Runs Past Gardner-Webb

ATHENS, Ga. --- The No. 23/24 University of Georgia softball team used five home runs to beat Gardner-Webb 14-0 on Wednesday, March 20 at Jack Turner Stadium.
The Bulldogs improved to 22-7 as Gardner-Webb fell to 3-14 in the five inning game.
Geri Ann Glasco got the start, struck out four and did not allow a hit in three innings of work to improve to 13-1 on the season. Chelsea Wilkinson came in to pitch the final two innings and struck out five of eight batters faced, including the final two batters of the game.
Alyssa Gutierrez (1-3) suffered the loss after giving up three runs on two hits. Jessica Childers also saw time, throwing 1 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs, five of which were earned, on 10 hits. Ashley Rhyne threw two innings of relief, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks.
Georgia took a 5-0 lead in the first inning and never looked back. Paige Wilson hit the first home run of the day when she sailed a long ball over the right field wall. After Glasco walked, Tina Iosefa knocked a two-run homer, her 10th of the season, over the center field wall to give Georgia a 3-0 lead. After Iosefa's home run, Gardner-Webb made a call to the bullpen and brought Childers to the circle. Tess Sito followed Kaylee Puailoa's double with a home run over the right field wall, Georgia's third of the inning which brought the score to 5-0.
The Bulldogs used a six-run second inning to increase their lead to 11-0. Glasco added to the home run total when she lined a two-run homer over the right field wall and drove in Niaja Griffin. Sito doubled to center field before Christine Olney hit a single to drive in Maya Branch and Sito, bringing the score to 10-0. Bryanna Blanco hit her first career home run and the fifth of the game when she put one over the right field wall.
Gardner-Webb turned to its third pitcher of the game, Rhyne, at the top of the third. With one out, Olney hit a bases-clearing double to score the final three runs of the game and give Georgia the 14-0 lead.
The Bulldogs turned to Wilkinson in the top of the fourth. After allowing the only hit of the game, she settled in to strike out the next three batters. Wilkinson followed suit in the top of the fifth, striking out the final two batters to seal the 14-0 victory.
The Bulldogs will return to action in the home SEC opener on Friday, March 22 at 6 p.m. when they host Ole Miss for the first of a three-game series.
