Georgia 8, Iowa 1:
In Georgia's first game on Saturday, seniors Sarah McCloud and Katie Murphy led the Bulldogs from the circle combining to allow just one Iowa run on four hits. McCloud started and tossed the first three frames allowing Iowa to manufacture just one run in the second, and Murphy (1-0) took over to start the fourth and worked the final four innings scoreless while giving up just one hit, striking out seven and walking none.
The Bulldogs built the senior pitching duo a comfortable lead out of the gate by getting four runs off of Hawkeye starter Kayla Massey (1-1) in the first. Senior Megan Wiggins started the rally with a one-out single up the middle, and she moved up to second when senior Alisa Goler drew a walk. Next, senior Brianna Hesson drove in the game's first run on a single to left. The Bulldogs then picked up two more runs on a pair of Hawkeye errors before junior Ashley Pauly capped the inning off with an RBI single to right.
Iowa produced its load run in the second inning. Jenny Schuelke doubled, moved up to third on a sacrifice from Brianna Luna and scored on an infield single from Katie Kroeger.
In the third, Georgia got the run back pushing its lead to 5-1. After a pair of singles from senior Laura Trout and Pauly putting runners on the corners, the two Bulldogs executed a double steal to plate the run.
The game reached its final margin in the sixth. With senior Taylor Schlopy aboard by drawing a walk, Wiggins drilled an RBI double center, and Goler followed with a two-run homer to right center. The long ball was the 43rd of Goler's career moving her into sole possession of second place in the UGA career record books just four shy of the school record of 47 held by Megan McAllister.
Also of note for the Georgia in the contest with Iowa, freshmen Tiesha Reed and Julia Echols made their Bulldog debuts. Reed entered as pinch runner and scored a run while Echols had two plate appearances and saw action in right field.
Georgia 1, East Carolina 0:
The Bulldogs' second contest on Saturday featured a pitcher's duel between Georgia's Erin Arevalo and East Carolina's Faith Sutton with Arevalo getting the edge for her first victory of the 2011 season.
Arevalo, opening her junior campaign, tossed six scoreless innings allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out a career-high 11 before giving way to sophomore Alison Owen in the seventh. Owen closed the door on the Pirates in the final inning to complete the shutout and earn her first save of the year.
Sutton (0-2) suffered the loss despite striking out eight and holding the Bulldogs hitless through the first three innings. The one run Sutton allowed came in the fourth inning on an RBI single to right from junior Ashley Razey. Redshirt sophomore Maya Branch scored the run after pinch running for Goler at second after Goler and Hesson strung together a pair of singles.
