A resilient effort from the Georgia softball team (46-18) allowed the Bulldogs to defeat No. 8 Florida State (53-9) by a 5-4 tally on Thursday at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in the first round of the Women's College World Series.

Samantha LaZear is active in the Athens community as well as in her hometown.

Career: Played in 228 games with 188 starts...Finished top 10 in Georgia’s career records with a .351 batting average (8th) and toughest to strikeout (1st)…Had a perfect fielding percentage in two of her four years at Georgia, finishing with a .990 mark…Tallied 23 sacrifice hits, 37 stolen bases, 122 runs, 161 hits and struck out just 29 times in 459 official at-bats...Earned numerous off-the-field honors, including CoSIDA Academic All-District, SEC Community Service Team, UGA’s LEAD Academy while a member of SAAC.

Played in 61 games, starting 50 of them...Totaled 47 hits with 36 runs and tied for a team-best nine sacrifice hits...Third on the team in batting average with a .388 clip...Did not commit a single error this season with 65 putouts...Went 2-for-3 in second game against Minnesota...Connected with six hits during the Texas A&M series, going 3-for-3 in game two...Posted two hits and two runs in second game at Alabama…Notched a hit in game one at No. 1 Florida in Super Regional action…Had two hits and a run in each game against Florida State and Auburn in the WCWS…Named to SEC Softball Community Service Team.
