ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia midfielder Alexa Newfield – already on the watch list for college soccer’s most prestigious award, the Hermann Trophy – added another accolade to her ledger this week as she was ranked the No. 38 upperclassman in the nation according to TopDrawerSoccer.com. The list encompasses sophomores, juniors, and seniors from all Division I programs.
The popular soccer Web site regularly publishes team rankings as well as a projected NCAA field of 64 – in which the Bulldogs are currently No. 24 – in addition to individual player rankings nationally and within each conference. SEC Top-20 player rankings have not yet been released.
Newfield was ranked No. 37 in the 2011 mid-season and postseason editions of the poll, leading Georgia in goals (16) and assists (8) last season. She broke the school record in both single-season shots (102) and points (40).
Newfield tallied Georgia’s game-winner on Friday night in the season opener vs. UNC Greensboro at home, converting on a penalty kick in double overtime to lead the Bulldogs to the 1-0 victory.
Newfield and the Bulldogs will next be in action this weekend as they travel to Lawrence, Kan., to take on Kansas on Friday night at 6 p.m. ET and South Dakota State on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. ET in neutral-site action.
