ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia soccer team has been tabbed No. 25 in the preseason edition of the Top Drawer Soccer “Tournament 64” rankings released Thursday afternoon.
The rankings are a season-long attempt to project the postseason college soccer tournament qualifiers, including every automatic conference berth. Defending national champion Stanford and runner-up Duke came in at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, followed by Notre Dame, Wake Forest, and new SEC member Texas A&M to round out the top five.
Georgia is one of five Southeastern Conference programs included in the first projected tournament field, joining the fifth-ranked Aggies, No. 14 Florida, No. 23 LSU, and No. 31 South Carolina. The SEC sent eight teams to last season’s NCAA Tournament, which ranked second-most among any conference in the nation behind only the ACC’s nine.
Updated projections will be released every Monday during the season.
Georgia was recently picked to finish second in the competitive SEC Eastern Division in a vote of the league’s 14 head coaches, and was named a ‘Program To Watch’ by Top Drawer Soccer earlier this summer. The Bulldogs open the 2012 season tomorrow, Aug. 17, taking on UNC Greensboro in a 7 p.m. contest at the UGA Soccer Stadium.
