ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia soccer players Alexa Newfield, Jenna Owens, and Ashley Baker received more recognition heading into the 2012 season, this time named to the College Sports Madness unofficial SEC Preseason All-Conference teams.
Newfield was named preseason first team All-SEC while Baker and Owens were named to the organization’s second team. College Sports Madness covers several intercollegiate sports including women’s soccer.
Previously the three were named to the SEC’s annual Watch List along with junior Nikki Hill, while Newfield and Baker were singled out by college soccer site All White Kit as potential candidates for player of the year awards in the offensive and goalkeeping categories, respectively.
The junior Newfield is a returning first team All-SEC and All-South Region selection, breaking the UGA record for shots (102) and points (40) in a single season in 2011. She led the team with 16 goals and eight assists last season.
Owens receives the honor after earning SEC All-Freshman accolades in 2011. The Colorado native had a strong rookie season, ranking third on the team in points with nine, coming by way of two goals and five assists.
Baker returns as a senior netminder with two seasons of starting experience behind her in one of the nation’s premier conferences. In 2011 the Lilburn native played over 2,000 minutes and recorded six shutouts behind 96 saves and a 0.780 save percentage on her way to third team All-South Region honors.
The Bulldogs will continue training this week in preparation for the 2012 regular season opener this Friday night, Aug. 17 at 7 p.m. vs. UNC Greensboro at home.
