ATHENS, Ga. --- Four members of the University of Georgia soccer team have been named to the second annual SEC Soccer Preseason Watch List, the league office announced Wednesday. Beginning in 2011, the Southeastern Conference began naming the watch list in lieu of announcing all-conference preseason teams.

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Baker, junior midfielder Alexa Newfield, junior defender Nikki Hill, and sophomore forward Jenna Owens were each named to the squad. It marks the second straight year Baker and Newfield have been included.

Baker is back for her final season in the red and black after anchoring the Bulldog defensive unit for each of the past two years. In 2011 she logged over 2,000 minutes in goal, amassing 96 saves and six shutouts with a 1.20 goals-against average.

Newfield returns after a record-setting campaign in 2011 in which she broke the UGA single-season record for shots (102) and points (40), leading the team in goals with 16 and in assists with eight. She enters 2012 ranked fourth all-time in career points at Georgia with 60, ranked fifth in career goals with 24, and ranked second in shots with 189.

Hill, after spending much of 2011 and 2012 playing with the Canadian U-20 team in anticipation of this year’s World Cup, will be a fixture on defense for Georgia after earning the starting left back spot last season. Hill also added a goal and two assists last season for four points.

Owens receives the honor after earning SEC All-Freshman accolades in 2011. The Colorado native had a strong rookie season, ranking third on the team in points with nine, coming by way of two goals and five assists.

The foursome will look to bolster a Bulldog squad aiming to reach the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time in the last six seasons and ninth overall. Georgia received an at-large bid into the field of 64 a year ago, and reached the second round for just the sixth time in school history.

Georgia officially opens the 2012 campaign next Fri., Aug. 17 with a 7 p.m. home meeting with UNC Greensboro. The Bulldogs will play the annual Red & Black intrasquad scrimmage this Friday night at 7 p.m. at the UGA Soccer Stadium. The exhibition is open to the public and admission is free.
