Georgia Named 'Program To Watch'

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia soccer team was named one of’s five ‘Programs To Watch’ in an announcement released Tuesday morning, joining Oklahoma State, Long Beach State, Memphis, and new SEC counterpart Texas A&M on the list.

The Bulldogs – under the leadership of third-year head coach Steve Holeman – are coming off a 13-7-2 season in 2011, a campaign that included a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last five seasons. With a win over Kansas on the Jayhawks’ home turf, Georgia reached the second round for just the sixth time in program history.

The Bulldogs are led by junior Alexa Newfield, who returns from a record-breaking sophomore campaign in which the Atlanta native broke the school record for shots in a season (102) and points in a season (40), while her 16 goals ranked second-most in UGA history. Newfield enters 2012 anchoring a strong Bulldog attack, currently ranked fourth all-time in career points (60), fifth in career goals (24), and second in shots (189).

In all, Georgia returns nine starters and 16 letterwinners from a season ago, including All-SEC goalkeeper Ashley Baker and All-Freshman selection Jenna Owens, who tallied nine points her rookie season on the strength of two goals and five assists. Georgia also ushers in a recruiting class of seven freshmen – five from Georgia and one apiece from New York and New Jersey. The group includes three forwards, three backs, and one midfielder.

The Bulldogs begin the 2012 season on Fri., Aug. 17 vs. UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m. in Athens.
