ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia rookie goalkeeper Jill Maloney is currently in action with the Republic of Ireland U-19 team as the squad participates in the UEFA Women’s U-19 Championship Elite Phase in Amsterdam. Ireland won its group in the first round of qualifying in October to advance to the second round.
Ireland will play three games on the trip, set to take on Italy, Austria, and Sweden on April 4, 6, and 9, respectively. The event is in advance of the EUFA European Championship finals in Wales in August, with the 24 remaining teams competing in six four-team groups. Group winners and runners-up will join host Wales in the finals tournament.
Maloney is a mid-year enrollee with the Bulldogs, having joined the team in January following early graduation. An Alpharetta, Ga., product, Maloney was a standout at Alpharetta High School and played club soccer with GSA Phoenix. She has W-League experience as the back-up keeper for the Atlanta Silverbacks in 2012.
Maloney had participated in 38 international competitions in 24 countries at the time of her signing with the Bulldogs, including 15 UEFA Championship competitions and four World Cup games – one as a member of the Ireland Senior National Team when they played against the United States in Phoenix on Dec. 1, 2012. Additionally, she has played against four English Premier League professional teams and earned her first cap against England in the U-19 Tri-Nations Tournament in 2010, at just 15 years old.
With the U.S. National Team, Maloney participated in Training Center events in 2010 and 2011, and was a member of the U-15 National Team Player Pool in 2010 and the U-14 Girls National Team in 2009.
