ATHENS, Ga. --- For the second straight year, Georgia soccer goalkeeper Ashley Baker has been called up to the England U23 team playing in the Four Nations Tournament in La Manga, Spain.
Baker and the rest of the squad will compete in the tournament against Sweden, Norway, and the United States from Feb. 26-March 1. Baker is one of 18 players on the roster including two goalkeepers, and is the only college player in the group.
The Lilburn, Ga., native is currently on the “long list” from which the British Olympic Association (BOA) will choose its roster for the 2012 Olympics. Great Britain head coach Hope Powell will pare down the list again in March before officially naming the roster at the beginning of July in anticipation of the Summer Games.
Baker has extensive experience playing for England, including last year’s Four Nations Tournament as well as two appearances in the U20 Women’s World Cup. In 2009 she helped England to the U19 European Championship.
This past season as a junior, Baker started all 22 games in goal for the NCAA Tournament-bound Bulldogs, playing over 2,000 minutes and earning six shutouts. She made 96 saves and posted a 1.20 goals-against average on her way to NSCAA All-South Region third team honors.
