Michelle Betos (2006-09)
Feb. 7, 2013
ATHENS, Ga. --- Former University of Georgia goalkeeper Michelle Betos was selected by Seattle Reign F.C. in the fifth round of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Supplemental Draft Thursday. With that, Betos becomes the second Bulldog alum to be drafted by the brand new NWSL, as 2012 graduate Ashley Baker was picked just last month in the league’s college draft.
The NWSL is the top professional women’s soccer league in the United States and includes eight teams, set to begin competition this spring.
Betos – a native of Flushing, N.Y. – finished her Georgia career in 2009 having rewritten the record book, ranked second among goalkeepers in wins (48) and third in saves (316) and shutouts (26). As a senior she started all 22 games and registered eight shutouts, including three straight over a span of over 320 minutes.
Since graduating from UGA, Betos has played professional soccer in the United States with the Boston Breakers and the New York Fury, and overseas with Apollon Ladies F.C. of the Champions League. Most recently she served as the goalkeepers coach at UNCG Greensboro under former Georgia assistant Steve Nugent.
