ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia soccer team fell by a 3-2 score to Villanova Sunday afternoon at the UGA Soccer Stadium in what was the first ever meeting between the programs. Georgia falls to 1-2 on the season while Villanova moves to 3-0-1.
"Soccer is a cruel game," said head coach Steve Holeman. "The best team doesn't always win, but we actually played some great soccer. Obviously we need to focus on defensive corner kicks. For the second time in two games it has cost us a result. Villanova gets two opportunities off corners and they scored both, and that's the margin of victory for them."
Georgia came out strong controlling play and scored first on the day when sophomore Alexa Newfield took a cross from Susannah Dennis and headed it in with 19:13 left to play in the first half. But the lead didn't last long, as Villanova's Stephanie Myers scored a minute later to even it up at 1-1.
Villanova then grabbed the lead with a second goal from Myers in the 31st minute, putting together the chance off a corner kick opportunity with the double assist going to Alexa Carugati and Megan Verdeur on the play.
The Wildcat lead would stand at 2-1 heading into halftime and shots even at 6-6.
Georgia once again came out and controlled play in the second half, hitting the crossbar twice on chances early on while a couple of other big chances were near misses. Shortly after that flurry, Katie Ryan scored the third goal for Villanova putting them up 3-1 in the 75th minute.
Georgia tried to mount the comeback when Jamie Pollock scored to cut the lead to just one, 3-2, in the 85th minute but the Bulldogs were unable to find the equalizer late.
"It was just unlucky. [Alexa Newfield] had a good shot, Jamie [Pollock] had a good chance off of a corner, and it just comes down to putting away every chance you get," Dennis said.
Georgia ended the game outshooting Villanova 17-11 and had three more corners than the Wildcats.
Next up, the Bulldogs will make a trip to Minneapolis, Minn., to play the Golden Gophers at 8 p.m. on Fri., Sept. 2 and then will play Iowa State on Sun., Sept. 4 at 11:30 a.m. Live audio will be available on Georgiadogs.com along with a live blog.
