ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia soccer team won both of its games on Saturday afternoon at the UGA Soccer Stadium, defeating Wake Forest 3-1 and Mercer 3-0 to pick up the sweep. The wins move the Bulldogs to 2-1 on the spring season with four games remaining.
Playing 35-minute halves in both games, Georgia was paced on the day freshman Becca Rasmussen – who tallied four assists. Rising junior Andie Fontanetta scored two goals.
After coming out strong vs. Wake Forest but unable to find the back of the net for much of the first half, Fontanetta got Georgia on the board with under three minutes to play as she took a pass from Rasmussen and cut back inside before firing far post to give the Bulldogs the 1-0 lead heading into halftime. Fontanetta struck again less than three minutes into the second half, sending one in from long range and beating the keeper low to make it 2-0. Georgia got its third goal 10 minutes later as Rasmussen found Caroline Waters for the score.
The Demon Deacons got on the board on a laser from 30 yards out with 18:38 to go, but the Bulldogs held on for the 3-1 win in the first game of the day.
In the Bulldogs’ second game, Georgia and Mercer played to a scoreless first half. But UGA broke through just three minutes after the intermission when Rasmussen served a perfect heel pass to Rachel Garcia, whose pass inside set up Gabby Seiler for the goal to make it 1-0, with assists going to both Rasmussen and Garcia on the play. Just two minutes later, Rasmussen fed Garcia – who fired it upper 90 to give the Bulldogs the 2-0 lead. Rounding out the scoring was Bria Washington later in the half, with an assist to Lauren Tanner.
The Bulldogs are back in action this Thursday night at 7 p.m., hosting North Georgia.
