ATHENS-----The Georgia gymnastics team previewed its 2013 routines at the annual Sneak Peek held Saturday at the Suzanne Yoculan Gymnastics Center. It was a chance for fans to catch a glimpse of the Gym Dogs before the season begins against fourth-ranked Oklahoma on Jan. 5.
The Gym Dogs split into two teams - Red and Black - and the Red team won behind a pair of 9.9s by Lindsey Cheek on vault and Shayla Worley on beam. The top five cumulative scores on each event added up to a 196.000 total for the Gym Dogs, including a 49.15 on vault and bars.
"I thought they did a really good job today," head coach Danna Durante said. "We talked about the opportunity to come out and compete and show the hard work they've been putting in, and they were great. We did see some things that we need to work on, so that's what we will do to get ready for Jan. 5."
Freshman Brandie Jay scored a pair of 9.8s on vault and floor for the Black team. She was one of three Georgia freshmen who competed Saturday along with Mary Beth Box and Anysia Unick. Brittany Rogers is scheduled to join the team in late December.
"I felt like we performed well today," Jay said. "We wanted to come out here and hit, and I think it was a good day for us. We also know that we have room to improve to get ready for the first meet."
The Gym Dogs will return to practice Monday and Tuesday before they break for the holidays.
"We'll talk about what we can take away from today," Durante said. "We have about seven or eight practices until we compete in the coliseum, so it's really about being aware now of where we need to tighten up."
