Chris Conley and Noel Couch
Oct. 29, 2012
If the shoe fits…buy it, wear it, walk it out! In the past few weeks there has been a lot of changing of the shoes. We hosted our annual Gym Dog formal with the original theme of a “Hoedown.” I splurged and purchased a new pair of cowboy boots to wear with my cowboy hat. I was in true country fashion, which is definitely different from my Jersey style. My good friend, Chris Conley, accompanied me and was a good sport for wearing the cowboy vest, which we made him fit into for the occasion. Together, the Gym Dogs sported many unique and stylish boots and outfits out on the dance floor. We had a delicious dinner cooked for us, snapped countless photos, and danced the night away under the stars. It was surely a night to remember. A special thanks goes to Christa Tanella, who headed up the whole extravaganza, along with the Ten-O Club members and dedicated friends.
We also had the sweet opportunity of taking part in a fall team retreat. There were no cowboy boots present here, but rather sneakers for the various outdoor activities we conquered. After “self-diagnostic tests,” we split up into two teams based on either our left-brain or right-brain personalities. We were then challenged to various team-building activities, which included a mini football game, Sudoku game, and scavenger hunt. We had a lot of fun and laughs, but everyone’s competitive side certainly showed during the games, including the coaches! We left having learned a lot about ourselves and each other, and definitely enhanced our Gym Dog morale.
The red and black supported pink as the Gym Dogs took part in the annual, In Her Shoes Breast Cancer Walk. Half of the team was up early warming up the dedicated ladies who committed themselves to walking in support of breast cancer awareness and to put an end to breast cancer. The other half of the team was up early warming up the dedicated runners who took part in the Do It For Broph 5K race. These devoted runners participated in memory of former UGA basketball player, Kevin Brophy. We believe it is important to help people and events in the community who do so much to help others.
I have a shout out and one rockstar status to be presented this week. Shout out to the new inductees of the Student- Athlete Leadership Academy, also known as L.E.A.D. (Leadership Education And Development). Congrats! And my long-time friend, practically cousin from Jersey, Zac Corradino, gets rockstar status. Zac attends Boston University and was caught up in a frightening armed robbery. He stood up to the perpetrators and they only got away with stealing a pen! He’s now BU’s latest campus celeb.
A special congratulations to former Gym Dog teammate Courtney McCool and Garrett Griffeth, who were married last weekend at a beautiful, autumn setting at Lake Frances in Tennessee. Best wishes to the newlyweds!
This past week was exciting for the Gym Dogs because we had verification of half routines and had the opportunity to do bars, beam, and floor in the coliseum, which was set up in meet form. It was such a thrill to be in there and it gave us even more motivation for the season. We had a solid practice in the coliseum and it was a great way to kick off fall break.
And speaking of fall break…can I get a GO DAWGS?! Our boys took the BIG W over Florida this past weekend. And as we all know, that is a BIG deal. I’m so proud of the team and it’s going to be a great week coming off of a fantastic weekend. So wear your red and black proudly this week because IT’S GREAT TO BE A GEORGIA BULLDOG!
Noel Couch, an All-American from Towaco, N.J., is a senior on the Georgia gymnastics team.
