Celebrate good times! Today I’m celebrating my birthday. Yes, I’ve been shaking things up in this world for 21 years…unbelievable! My teammates joined me at my new apartment on Sunday to celebrate with me. Although the Couch crew couldn’t be here, I received a “birthday box” all the way from Jersey. I’m so thankful to have such wonderful people in my life to celebrate with.
Speaking of celebration, we officially kicked off the 2012-2013 school year with the start of classes on Monday. There were students, buses, backpacks, and books galore. It was an exciting week and a bit hectic, but we made it to the light at the end of the tunnel…Friday! That afternoon we had a team conditioning testing. The test included a rope climb. The rope is a new addition hanging in our facility. The Gym Dogs are good rope climbers!
After practice Friday I picked up the freshies and we cheered on the women’s soccer team as they beat UNC-Greensboro 1-0 in double overtime. You go girls! That weekend also included the team attending Picture Day at Sanford Stadium. We greeted, took photos with, and signed posters for the countless fans that were in attendance. I always love meeting all the devoted Bulldog fans who truly enjoy and support what we do. I also like seeing all the new and exciting red and black wardrobes and accessories that come passing by.
Sunday afternoon we celebrated with former Gym Dog and friend, Courtney McCool at her bridal shower. It was fun chatting and playing games with everyone, and I wish McCool the best as she and Garrett prepare for their special day.
Monday it was back to the grind as we tested gymnastics skills. Even at this early stage in the year I’m happy to see our team getting after it in the gym. And of course, our Brian Bruce is back and assuming his usual position up in “the heavens” (the balcony) to watch our practices. Good to have Brian back again this year. We’re waiting for the barking to begin!
The following week was filled with a few fun adventures. On Monday Shay, Courney Kupets, and a few of our friends attended the Dierks Bentley concert on campus. We put on our boots and sang along to his famous country songs. Friday night Christa, Shay, Kati, Mariel, Camille, Brandi, Mary Beth, Anysia, and I (wow what a group) made our way to the top of the intramural field parking lot where we met up with a huge group of people to swing dance. With a few instructions and partners who knew what THEY were doing, we were swing dancing queens. We had a lot of fun and a lot of laughs as we danced the night away.
Although weekend festivities have ended, my birthday festivities are just beginning. Yay! I’m thrilled to embrace another year of my life, another school year, another gymnastics season, and all the incredible opportunities and people that this year will bring into my life. Birthdays are fabulous and so much fun, I can’t believe I’m turning 21!
