ATHENS-----A pair of in-state gymnasts - Lauren Johnson of Atlanta and Beth Roberts of Tifton - will attend the University of Georgia and compete for the Gym Dogs, UGA head coach Danna Durante announced Wednesday.
Roberts and Johnson will join four other incoming freshmen on the 2014 squad.
"We're excited to have athletes who represent the state of Georgia and who are passionate about gymnastics," Durante said. "It's been a dream for both of them to compete at the University of Georgia. They are both very strong and have room to continue to improve, so we are excited about that."
Roberts trained at Dream It Gymnastics and was a 2011 J.O. Nationals qualifier and a two-time J.O. National Invitational Tournament qualifier. She was also the 2011 and 2012 state bars champion.
Johnson trained at Gwinnett Gymnastics Center in Lilburn. She trained elite for two years and was a 2012 J.O. Level 10 national team member.
In addition to Johnson and Roberts, the Gym Dogs' freshman class will also include Ashlyn Broussard of Plano, Texas, Kiera Brown of Newport News, Va., Morgan Reynolds of Athens, Ga., and Rachel Schick of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
"It's a very diverse, strong group," Durante said. "They are all excited about the University of Georgia, and they are going to make our team better. What we are losing experience-wise we are going to have to work to grow. They are going to replace four seniors with great passion and work ethic, but it's going to be a good, strong group."
Georgia returns 11 gymnasts from the 2013 team.
