ATHENS-----Nine University of Georgia gymnasts were named to the SEC Winter Academic Honor Roll for 2012-13, it was announced Tuesday by the league office.
The 2012-13 Winter SEC Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2012 Spring, Summer and Fall terms.
The Gym Dogs named to the Honor Roll include seniors Kati Breazeal (communication studies), Noel Couch (international affairs/digital and broadcast journalism), Christa Tanella (human development and family science) and Shayla Worley (marketing/finance), juniors Lindsey Cheek (psychology) and Cat Hires (communication studies), and sophomores Chelsea Davis (athletic training), Whitney Kirby (exercise and sport science) and Sarah Persinger (consumer journalism).
Included in the criteria for the SEC Academic Honor Roll is: a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; and prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution. The SEC Freshman Academic Honor Roll will be announced this summer.
The gymnastics team was honored at the annual UGA awards banquet on Monday night with the Faculty Athletics Representative Award for earning the highest team grade point average. Freshman Anysia Unick was one of six student-athletes recognized for maintaining an ‘A’ average, while Couch and Worley were recognized for having a 3.70 cumulative GPA. Tanella was honored with the Academic Achievement Award, and Worley earned the team’s Scholar-Athlete award for the highest GPA.
