April 23, 2013

ATHENS-----University of Georgia senior Shayla Worley will be inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame as a member of the 2007 U.S. Women's Artistic Gymnastics World Championship Team.

Worley and six of her teammates will be honored at the Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony to be held in conjunction with the 2013 U.S. Championships in Hartford, Conn., Aug. 15-18. Joining Worley will be Shawn Johnson, Alicia Sacramone, Anastasia Liukin, Sam Peszek, Ivana Hong and Bridget Sloan.

"This is truly a pleasant surprise and it really doesn't seem like it's been very long since we won gold in Germany," Worley said. "I am honored to be inducted into such elite company and couldn't be more proud of my fellow World teammates as well."

Worley and her teammates won the team gold medal in Stuttgart, Germany, which was the second gold ever for the USA and the first World Championships team outside of the United States. The U.S. Women's Team won a total of seven medals total - four gold, two silver and one bronze - from the World Championships, and the U.S. women qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games with their performance.

"I'm really proud of Shayla for being honored in this way," said UGA coach Danna Durante. "It just speaks to her dedication and work ethic from the time she was a young gymnast. The things she accomplished as a young gymnast led to her being such a large part of Georgia gymnastics."

Worley helped lead the Gym Dogs to the Super Six this season for the first time since 2009. She was named Southeast Region Gymnast of the Year and earned All-America honors on bars and beam. The Orlando, Fla., native also shared the SEC beam title.
