ATHENS-----Georgia gymnast Brandie Jay has been named SEC Co-Freshman of the Week for her performance last weekend, it was announced Tuesday.
Jay turned in two scores of 9.9 or higher, including a career-high 9.975 on floor, to help the Gym Dogs achieve a season-high score of 197.800 at NC State on Sunday. Her 9.975 on floor is the highest mark by a Georgia gymnast this season and matches the best score on floor by a Georgia freshman since Courtney Kupets in 2006. Jay also turned in a 9.9 on vault as the Gym Dogs posted a season-high road score of 49.4.
This is the second time this year the SEC has honored Jay. The Fort Collins, Colo., native was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Jan. 23 after leading Georgia to a pair of wins over Auburn and Stanford. She is tied for 10th nationally on vault with a 9.915 RQS.
Jay and teammate Brittany Rogers have combined to win five SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season. Jay shared the honor this week with Alabama's Lauren Beers.
Georgia returns to action this weekend at the SEC Championship in North Little Rock, Ark. UGA will be the No. 3 seed in the 7 p.m. session competing against No. 1 Florida, No. 2 Alabama and No. 4 LSU.
