ATHENS-----Former Georgia national champion Kat Ding is one of three finalists for the Atlanta Sports Awards’ Collegiate Athlete of the Year Presented by The Home Depot.
The winner will be announced at the Atlanta Sports Awards, which will be held at the historic Fox Theatre’s Egyptian Ballroom on Tuesday, March 5. The other two finalists are UGA All-America linebacker Jarvis Jones and Sasha Goodlett from the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team.
Ding was the 2012 NCAA champion on the uneven bars and floor exercise, becoming just the second gymnast in NCAA history to repeat as the national champion on bars. The Sparks, Nev., native was also the sixth gymnast in Georgia’s storied history to win more than one national title in the same year and the first to win back-to-back crowns on an individual event since 1992-93.
Ding was a First-Team All-America on four events last season and won a total of 26 individual event titles. She finished her career at Georgia ranked seventh all-time in career bars points. The Sparks, Nev., native also became just the fourth gymnast in Georgia history to earn First Team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
Created in 2006 by the Atlanta Sports Council, the Atlanta Sports Awards has become a way to rally the Atlanta sports community to recognize athletic excellence on a yearly basis. The Atlanta Sports Awards honors those who distinguish themselves from among the five million people living in Atlanta.
