Gym Dogs Win Corvallis Regional, Advance To NCAA Championships

CORVALLIS, Ore.-----The fourth-ranked Georgia gymnastics team posted a 197.425 to win the NCAA Corvallis Regional Saturday at Gill Coliseum, earning a spot in the 12-team NCAA Championships April 19-21 in Los Angeles.

It marked the 23rd NCAA Regional title in program history for the Gym Dogs, who qualified for the national championships for the 29th time. Georgia's 197.425 was the second-highest score of any team in the six regional meets on Saturday.

Arkansas placed second with a 196.950 to also advance to the NCAA Championships. Arizona State finished third with a 195.700, followed by Oregon State (195.375), Boise State (195.300) and California (195.125).

"This feels really good, but this is what we expected," UGA coach Danna Durante said. "It's something we've been talking about since August, and it's just another step. It's certainly good to have this one in the bag, and now it's time to get focused on going to L.A. I saw some things today that we need to work on and p repare us for that meet. We need to continue to stay in the process and do our job."

Georgia opened with a 49.25 on vault in the first rotation behind a team-high 9.875 by Brittany Rogers. The Gym Dogs had a bye in the second rotation and went to bars in the third rotation. Oregon State opened the meet with a 47.525 on bars after counting two falls, while Arkansas posted a 49.25 on floor.

UGA turned in a 49.275 on bars to take the lead with a 98.525. Chelsea Davis had a meet-high 9.9, her 12th straight bars score of 9.9 or higher. Arkansas was in second with a 98.5.

Georgia then began to pull away with a 49.475 on beam in the fourth rotation. Shayla Worley had a meet-best 9.925, while Sarah Persinger and Rogers added a pair of 9.9s.

After a bye in the fifth rotation, Georgia closed the meet with a 49.425 on floor behind a career-high 9.95 by Worley to win the floor title and 9.9s by Persinger and Brandie Jay

"We came in here with intentions and goals and nothing was going to stop us," Worley said. "Now it's time to go back to work and get ready for nationals. We were able to buld some momentum and it really rocketed from there."

Georgia posted the highest team score on all four events.

The other 10 teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships on Saturday include Florida, Oklahoma, LSU, UCLA, Michigan, Minnesota, Stanford, Illinois, Alabama and Utah.

Georgia will compete again in one of the semifinal sessions of the NCAA Championships on April 19. The first session is slated for 3 p.m. ET at UCLA's Pauley Pavilion, while the second session will begin at 9 p.m. The top three teams in each session will advance to the Super Six April 20 at 7 p.m., and the individual event finals will be held April 21 at 4 p.m.
