TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-----No. 9 Georgia led second-ranked Alabama at the halfway point, but the Crimson Tide came back to claim a 196.475-196.325 win in front of 14,501 fans Friday at Coleman Coliseum.
The Gym Dogs (1-1) led by .15 entering the third rotation, but Alabama came back to take a narrow advantage going to the final event. Georgia posted a 49.125 on beam, but it wasn't enough to overcome a 49.2 on floor by the Crimson Tide (1-0).
"I think we grew as the meet went on," said Georgia head coach Jay Clark. "We were tight in the beginning. I'm proud of the fight. It was a scrappy performance and wasn't perfect, but we never quit and kept hammering. It's a decent road score early in the season and we'll continue to get better.
"I'm proud of the overall effort of everybody. We talked about staying aggressive and we did that. We knew there would be an ebbs and flows. We got down early, but came back. It was an overall good effort."
Alabama took a 49.55-49.225 lead after the first rotation. The Gym Dogs turned in four straight scores of 9.875 on bars by Christa Tanella, Shayla Worley, Gina Nuccio and Kat Ding. The 9.875 for Tanella was a career high.
The Crimson Tide was led on vault by Geralen Stack-Eaton, who scored a perfect 10, and Ashley Sledge, who posted a 9.975.
Georgia took a 98.325-98.175 lead at the halfway point by outscoring the Crimson Tide 49.1-48.625 in the second rotation. Cat Hires turned in a career-high 9.9 on vault, while Ding posted a 9.875.
Alabama regained the lead going into the final rotation, 147.275-147.200. Georgia scored a 48.875 on floor, led by another career-high by Tanella of 9.85.
