Stanford Edges Gym Dogs

Jan. 12, 2014

STANFORD, Calif.-----Eighth-ranked Georgia led after each of the first two rotations, but No. 9 Stanford rallied to beat the Gym Dogs, 196.325-196.150, Sunday at Maples Pavilion.

Georgia gymnasts placed first on three events, including a meet-high 9.925 on bars by Chelsea Davis, while Lindsey Cheek scored 9.9s on vault and bars for the second straight meet. The Gym Dogs were competing for the second time this weekend, following a 196.500 in the season-opener at Oklahoma on Friday.

"We knew this weekend would be tough," said UGA coach Danna Durante. "There were some good things that came out of today, but floor has to be better. We beat them on vault and bars, and beam was very close. Floor was the big difference, so that's the thing that absolutely has to get better. I thought we were in a better spot than last year when we started, and I still think we are, but we just need to be tougher and stronger."

Georgia (0-2) opened with a 49.325 behind a 9.925 by Davis as the anchor and a second straight 9.9 by Cheek in the No. 4 spot. Stanford scored a 48.775 on vault.

The Gym Dogs maintained their lead in the second rotation with a 49.0 vault, while Stanford posted a 49.1 on bars. Cheek again scored a 9.9 to place first, and UGA led at the halfway point 98.325-97.875.

Stanford (4-0) grabbed the lead by outscoring the Gym Dogs 49.200-48.675 in the third rotation. Brandie Jay was UGA's top floor performer with a 9.85.

In the fourth rotation, the Cardinal used a 49.25 on floor to hold off the Gym Dogs' 49.15 on beam. Mary Beth Box, Cheek and Kaylan Earls each scored a 9.875 to tie for first.

This was Georgia's second top-10 opponent to start the season, following the meet at No. 3 Oklahoma. Four of the Gym Dogs' first five opponents were ranked in the preseason top-10.

Georgia will be back in action Friday against No. 5 LSU at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available for purchase on georgiadogs.com or by calling the UGA Ticket Office at 1-877-541-1231.
