Philip Ogletree, who has more than a decade of coaching experience in the Southeastern Conference, has completed four seasons on the Georgia staff. He helps direct Georgia’s efforts on vault and floor, two events in which the Gymdogs have excelled.
Ogletree guided Brandie Jay to a historic run on vault in 2016, as the Fort Collins, Colorado native won both the SEC and NCAA vault titles, the first gymnast to accomplish the feat since 2011. Between vault and floor, Georgia claimed six All-America honors in the 2016 season, spread amongst seniors Jay (two First-Team vault), Brittany Rogers (two Second-Team vault) and Mary Beth Box (two Second-Team floor).
Four different Gymdogs claimed top honors on vault throughout the 2015 season, led by Ashlyn Broussard with four event titles. Brandie Jay garnered first team All-America honors on vault. In addition, UGA matched its highest floor score since the 2010 season. Mary Beth Box was a first team All-American on floor and competed in the NCAA Individual Event Finals.
Georgia finished the 2014 season ranked in the top-10 on both vault and floor. Ogletree was named the 2014 NACGC/W Southeast Region Co-Assistant Coach of the Year. Under his direction, freshman Lauren Johnson won the SEC vault title with a 9.975 in just her second career vault. The Gymdogs also scored a 49.625 on vault vs. Denver in 2014, which tied for the highest vault score in the country throughout the regular season.
In 2013, Ogletree coached bars and floor, where the Gymdogs finished the 2013 season ranked third and 10th in the nation, respectively.
Seven All-America honors were earned by Georgia gymnasts on bars and floor in 2013. Chelsea Davis, who spent most of the season ranked No. 1 nationally on the uneven bars, earned first team All-America honors on bars, while Brittany Rogers, Shayla Worley and Christa Tanella received second team accolades. Rogers shared the SEC bars title. Under Ogletree’s direction, Noel Couch was a second team All-American on floor in 2013.
Georgia posted the highest team bars score in 12 meets in 2013.
Before coming to Georgia in the summer of 2012, Ogletree served as an assistant coach at LSU for 12 seasons.
Ogletree was a key part of LSU’s success from 2001-2012, primarily coaching the Tigers on the uneven bars while also serving as the recruiting coordinator.
During his tenure under D.D. Breaux at LSU, Ogletree guided the Tigers to 12 of the top-13 bars scores in school history, including a school record 49.650 in 2002. His bars squads ranked in the top-10 nationally each year from 2004-10, including a No. 3 ranking in 2005 and a No. 4 ranking in 2009.
LSU gymnasts earned a total of 16 All-America honors on the uneven bars under Ogletree’s watch, including a school-record three gymnasts in 2005 and 2010. In 2010, two LSU gymnasts finished in the top-five on bars at the NCAA Individual Event Finals, and the Tigers posted the second-highest bars total in the NCAA prelims.
Ogletree, a member of the UGA men’s gymnastics team from 1980-82, was named the NCAA Central Regional Assistant Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2005 and helped lead the Tigers to the NCAA Super Six in 2008 and 2009.
A native of Atlanta, Ogletree also previously coached at the Georgia Gymnastics Academy in Lawrenceville and the Atlanta School of Gymnastics in Tucker. He arrived at LSU in the fall of 2000 with 18 years of coaching experience, including 11 with Level 10 gymnasts in the state of Georgia.
Ogletree graduated from Georgia State in 1992 with a degree in early childhood education. He and his wife Jill have two children, Bridgett and Jake.
