CARNOUSTIE, Scotland --- Georgia rising sophomore Rocio Sanchez Lobato won a pair of matches in the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship on Friday to advance to the semifinals at Carnoustie Golf Links.
Sanchez Lobato, a native of Marbella, Spain, defeated a pair of Spaniards who also will be sophomores for U.S. collegiate teams this fall by identical 1-up margins.
In the morning, Sanchez Lobato topped Camilla Hedberg, a Florida Gator from Sitges, in the round of 16.
Sanchez Lobato then won a back-and-forth battle with Noemi Jimenez, a Malaga native who plays for Arizona State, in the afternoon semifinals.
Jimenez owned a 1-up lead at the turn after she won four holes (No. 4, No. 5, No. 7 and No. 9) to Sanchez Lobato's three (No. 3, No. 6 and No. 8).
Sanchez Lobato knotted the match by winning No. 12, but Jimenez secured No. 13 to regain a 1-up edge. Sanchez Lobato then won No. 15 and No. 16 to earn her first advantage since No. 3. The golfers halved the final two holes to provide Sanchez Lobato with the victory.
Sanchez Lobato has now won all four of her match play competitions over the past two days by 1-up tallies. On Thursday, she knocked off fifth-seeded Giulia Molinaro of Italy and Arizona State and Marta Sanz of Madrid and Auburn in the first- and second-rounds, respectively.
Sanchez Lobato will now face No. 8 seed Perrine Delacour of France on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. local time, 3:30 a.m. ET. Hole-by-hole scoring will be available at the Ladies Golf Union website, www.lgu.org.
