CARNOUSTIE, Scotland --- Rocio Sanchez Lobato, a rising sophomore on the Georgia women's golf team, won both her first- and second-round matches at the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship at the Carnoustie Golf Links on Thursday.
Sanchez Lobato, a native of Marbella, Spain, shot 81-76=157 in two rounds of stroke play qualifying on Tuesday and Wednesday to tie for 58th, and she entered the match play portion as the No. 60 seed.
On Thursday morning, Sanchez Lobato defeated Italy's Giulia Molinaro, 1-up. Molinaro, who recently completed her senior season at Arizona State, tied for third in stroke play qualifying.
Sanchez Lobato returned in the afternoon to secure a second 1-up victory, topping Madrid native and Auburn rising junior Marta Sanz.
Sanchez Lobato will again face a fellow Spaniard and SEC counterpart on Friday when she takes on Florida's Camilla Hedberg in the round of 16 at 3:50 am ET.
In additional Georgia Golf news on Thursday, incoming freshman Amira Alexander and rising junior Amelia Hill wrapped up play at the GSGA's Top 10 Women's Classic at Governor's Towne Club in Actworth.
Alexander finished tied for sixth after shooting rounds of 71 and 74 to finish at 1-over 145, five shots off the pace of medalist Emily Kurey. Hill carded rounds of 76 and 78 to tie for 20th at 154.
