ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia women's golf team will be in action for the second time in as many weeks when the 19th-ranked Bulldogs compete in the Bryan National Collegiate at the Bryan Park Championship Course in Browns Summit, N.C., this Friday through Sunday.
The tournament will conclude Georgia's 2012-13 regular-season campaign and first-year head coach Josh Brewer is eager to finalize his team's lineup for the SEC Championships, which will be April 19-21.
The Bulldogs' playing five will consist of Kailey Walsh, Emilie Burger, Manuela Carbajo Ré, Rocio Sanchez Lobato and Amira Alexander. Walsh finished fifth and Burger was seventh individually at last weekend's LSU Golf Classic, while Carbajo Ré tied for 14th. Sanchez Lobato was medalist at the FSU Match-Up Invitational in February.
"We need to continue to build that consistency throughout the lineup," Brewer said. "Kailey has been playing well, and Emilie is starting to play like the All-American she is. We've gotten some good production from the Rocio and Manuela. The top four have proven they can win any tournament or be at the top of the leaderboard. It would be nice to do that all in one week, but maybe we're waiting for the post-season to do that.
"We've shown signs of getting production out of Amira, Collins (Bradshaw) and Abby (Johnson) out of that five spot, which takes some pressure off of the top four," Brewer continued. "It would be great to build some momentum heading into the SEC Championship."
On Wednesday, Walsh was named the SEC Freshman of the Week.
"Kailey has played well the entire spring," Brewer said. "She has two top 20s and has been by stroke average our No. 1 player this spring. She continues to work hard and has improved so much since she stepped on campus. I'm really proud of her work ethic and her ability to step up when we really needed someone to do that."
There are five top-10 and eight top-25 teams – as well as half of the SEC – in the 17-school field this weekend. No. 2 Duke headlines the list of participants, which also includes No. 6 Arkansas, Auburn, No. 5 Florida, Florida State, the No. 19 Bulldogs, Louisville, Michigan State, No. 9 North Carolina, No. 23 N.C. State, South Carolina, Tennessee, No. 7 Vanderbilt, No. 15 Virginia, Wake Forest, UNC Greensboro and UNC Wilmington.
The Bulldogs will be paired with Florida and Auburn on Friday, teeing off from No. 10 in waves beginning at 9:05 a.m. ET. Live stats will be available throughout the weekend at www.golfstat.com.
