ATHENS, Ga. --- The Georgia women's golf team will return to action for the second time in as many weeks when the Bulldogs open play in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship on Sunday at English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans, La..
Nine top-25 and four top-10 teams are featured in the 17-school field. No. 1 USC headlines the list of participating schools, which also includes No. 2 UCLA, No. 4 Washington, No. 9 Alabama, No. 11 Clemson, No. 12 Oklahoma State, No. 18 Florida, No. 23 LSU and No. 24 Auburn. Baylor, Denver, the Bulldogs, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Texas, Tulane and UT-San Antonio round out the competitors.
"We're excited," head coach Josh Brewer said. "Three of the top four teams in the country are there...some teams we probably won't see the rest of the spring from the West Coast. This gives us a chance to measure ourselves against them. And there's plenty of SEC schools for us to compete against. It's a very good golf course, a PGA Tournament golf course. It will be a good challenge for us."
Last week, Georgia defeated four top-25 teams en route to finishing fifth at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in the Bulldogs' first full team tournament of the spring. Brewer will employ the same playing five for this week's tournament, with Harang Lee, Manuela Carbajo Ré, Rocio Sanchez Lobato, Amira Alexander and Sammi Lee occupying the No. 1-5 spots in the Bulldogs' lineup.
"It was a solid start for everybody and it was nice that everybody could contribute two scoring rounds and create a little momentum," Brewer said. "We got better each day and the last round, if you could take one hole away, would have been a heckuva round of golf. A top-five finish and beating a few SEC schools was very important for our confidence."
Georgia will be paired with Baylor and UT-San Antonio for Sunday's opening round, teeing off at 10:45 a.m. ET from No. 10 and playing the back side of the course first. Live scoring will be available on the internet via www.golfstat.com.
