KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --- The No. 15-ranked Georgia women's golf team opened with an 17-over 305 at the Mercedes-Benz SEC/PAC 12 Challenge on Friday. The Bulldogs are in 17th place at Holston Hills Country Club.

"We still haven't played the way I know we're capable of playing," head coach Kelley Hester said. "Today we had to count a big number, which hurt. I feel like this group has so much potential, and we're so close to putting it together."

Senior Milena Savich led Georgia for the third time in the last six rounds with a 1-over 73. The Bulldogs also counted Emilie Burger's 74, Marta Silva Zamora's 76 and an 82, the tally posted by both Tess Fordham and Rocio Sanchez Lobato.

The Challenge field includes eight top-10 and 14 top-25 teams, as well as 15 of the nation's top-20 individual golfers.

Top-ranked UCLA grabbed the first-round lead with a 7-under 281, three shots better than No. 6 Alabama.

Stephanie Meadow of Alabama and Lauren Stratton of Vanderbilt are tied atop the individual leaderboard. They shot 68 on Friday, a stroke better than Stephanie Kono of UCLA.

For Georgia, Savich is tied for 23rd, Burger is tied for 32nd, Silva Zamora is tied for 55th and Fordham and Sanchez Lobato are knotted in 104th.

"We'll try to dig ourselves out of a hole the next couple of days," Hester said. "We'll keep trying to improve and get better. I do think this is a golf course that you learn something about every time you play it. Hopefully, we'll do that."

Play continues through Sunday, with live scoring updates available at www.golfstat.com.
