GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- The No. 10-ranked Georgia women's golf team shot 295 in Sunday's final round of the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the University of Florida's Mark Bostick Golf Course and finished fourth in the 17-team field.
"We got off to a horrible start today," head coach Kelley Hester said. "We were 11-over through our first six holes. I was proud of them. They showed a lot of character to dig their heels in. We just didn't quite have it today. We would've liked to finish higher, but fourth place in a field like this is a solid showing. Given the way we came out of the blocks today, I'll take it. It could've been worse."
Marta Silva Zamora led the Bulldogs with a 1-over 71, while Georgia also counted Emilie Burger's 73, Milena Savich's 75 and Collins Bradshaw's 76. Rocio Sanchez Lobato shot 77.
Overall, Burger finished sixth at 1-over 211, Silva Zamora tied 15th at 219, Savich tied for 28th at 223, and Bradshaw and Sanchez Lobato tied for 48th at 229. Tess Fordham, who competed as an individual, tied for 79th at 239.
No. 23 Florida overtook No. 2 Alabama to claim the team title. The Gators' closing 287 pushed them ahead of the Tide by a single stroke. Rounding out the top-10 teams were Florida State at 872, the Bulldogs at 877, No. 11 Duke at 882, South Florida, Arkansas and Auburn all at 885, No. 14 Baylor at 886 and Ole Miss at 891.
Florida State's Maria Salinas captured medalist honors at 2-under 206 after a closing 66.
Georgia will return to action in two weeks when the Bulldogs host the 40h annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic at the University of Georgia Golf Course.
"We have four seniors and we're always excited to play at home," Hester said. "Maybe we can do what Florida did today. Playing at the home course does have some advantages with familiarity with the course and home fans. I know the girls are looking forward to it."
