HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- The No. 14 Georgia women's golf team shot 24-over 308 in Friday's opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. The Bulldogs are in 11th place at Long Cove Club with 36 holes remaining in the event.
Freshman Manuela Carbajo Ré fired a 2-over 73 and is tied for eighth individually, five shots off the lead. Georgia also counted a 74 from Kailey Walsh, a 77 from Rocio Sanchez Lobato and an 82 from Emilie Burger.
"We got off to a slow start," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It was cold and our first three holes were into the wind but that shouldn't be as big of a factor as it was. We weren't focused for some reason. I'm trying to figure that out. Manuela played well and really had a chance to shoot even-par but couldn't quite get there. Kailey had a solid round…something she can build on after a good finish in our last event. Collins and Emilie have to play better. They know that, though, and I'm confident they'll be ready to go tomorrow."
Carbajo Ré started slow, with a bogey at No. 1, a double-bogey at No. 3 and a bogey at No. 4 to stand 4-over through as many holes. She birdied No. 5 and then recorded six straight pars before another birdie at No. 12. Carbajo Ré reached 1-over with a birdie at No. 15 before giving that stroke back with a bogey at No. 17.
Overall, Walsh is tied for 34th, Sanchez Lobato is tied for 42nd and Burger is tied for 71st. Collins Bradshaw, who shot 90, is 81st.
No. 8 Arkansas shot 293 to grab the team lead by three shots over both No. 3 North Carolina and LSU. No. 11 Vanderbilt is fourth at 296, followed by No. 4 Alabama, No. 17 Arizona State and Tennessee all at 297, UCF at 298, No. 19 Virginia at 201, Wake Forest at 304, the Bulldogs at 308, TCU at 311, Furman at 313, South Carolina at 314 and Auburn at 315.
Play will continue on Saturday. The Bulldogs will be paired with Wake Forest and TCU, teeing off from No. 10 in waves beginning at 9:33 a.m. Live scoring will be updated on a three-hole basis at www.golfstat.com
