HILTON HEAD, S.C. --- The No. 9-ranked Georgia women's golf finished sixth in the weather-shortened, 36-hole Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Sunday. The last several holes of Saturday's second round were completed early Sunday afternoon and the third round was cancelled due to travel considerations.
"It would've been nice to play another 18 holes to try to make up for the bad holes yesterday," head coach Kelley Hester said. "In a 36-hole tournament, there's not much margin for error. In a 54-hole tournament, you have a chance to make up for some of your mistakes. The girls were really disappointed we couldn't play another 18 holes today. You play an outside game and sometimes weather makes a difference."
In the second round, the Bulldogs counted an even-par 71 from Marta Silva Zamora, a pair of 77s from Tess Fordham and Milena Savich and a 78, the score posted by both Emilie Burger and Rocio Sanchez Lobato. UGA's Abby Johson, who was competing as an individual, posted an 81.
On the individual leaderboard, Silva Zamora tied for fourth at even-par 142, five shots off the pace of medalist Steaphanie Meadow of Alabama. Burger tied for 20th at 150, Savich tied for 38th at 154, Sanchez Lobato tied for 43rd at 155, Fordham tied for 49th at 156 and Johnson tied for 62nd at 159.
No. 2 Alabama captured the team title at 3-over 571, 11 shots better than No. 10 North Carolina in second. Rounding out the top-10 teams were No. 5 Vanderbilt at 593, UCF at 596, Virginia at 598, the Bulldogs at 600, TCU at 602, South Carolina 604 and No. 17 Tennessee and Wake Forest both at 608.
"The conditions were tough today," Hester said. "The girls played fairly well given the circumstances. It's hard to get into playing five, six or seven holes. I think we played better than we scored. We'll try to learn from our mistakes, improve on them and ultimately hope this gets us headed in the right direction."
Georgia will return to action in two weeks when the Bulldogs travel to Gainesville, Fla., to compete in the SunTrust Gator Invitational at the University of Florida's Mark Bostick Golf Course.
