RIO GRANDE, P.R. --- The Georgia women's golf team fired a 10-over 298 in Sunday's first round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, leaving the Bulldogs tied for sixth but just three shots from second.
No. 8 Arkansas grabbed a seven-shot lead at the Rio Mar Country Club by shooting even-par 288. Trailing the Razorbacks and rounding out the top-10 teams are No. 7 Alabama at 295, No. 22 Iowa State at 297, No. 15 N.C. State and Georgia Regents Augusta both at 298, the Bulldogs and Auburn tied at 298, Tennessee at 300 and No. 19 Northwestern at 301.
Freshmen Harang Lee and Sammi Lee paced Georgia with a pair of 1-over 73s. The Bulldogs also counted a 74 by Amira Alexander and a 78 from Manuela Carbajo Ré, while dropping Rocio Sanchez Lobato's 84.
"It was a good round and there were definitely a lot of positives," head coach Josh Brewer said. "It's great to see Sammi and Harang play well all day. They've both been working hard, and you like to see them rewarded for that. Amira played over the break and I think that has helped her be sharp. Manuela and 'Ro' were our top two in qualifying. I know they will play better, probably really well at some point in the next two days."
On the individual leaderboard, Lee and Lee are tied for sixth, five shots off the pace of Arkansas' Emily Tubert. In addition, Alexander is tied for 18th, Carbajo Ré is tied for 51st and Sanchez Lobato is tied for 75th.
The Bulldogs will be paired with Auburn, Georgia Regents Augusta and Tennessee for Monday's second round. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 7:00 a.m. ET, and live scoring will be updated on a three-hole basis at golfstat.com.
