ATHENS, Ga. – Heather Schmidt signed her National Letter of Intent to ride for the Georgia equestrian team during the early signing period. Schmidt is the daughter of Grant and Debra Schmidt and will compete in horsemanship on the Georgia western team. Schmidt trains under the guidance of Chris and Melissa Jones.
“Heather caught my eye the first time I watched her show as her arena presence was stunning and her performance was flawless,” assistant coach Mary Meneely said. “She is a wonderful young lady and a superior athlete!”
The Bettendorf, Iowa native comes to Georgia as one of the top rider in the U.S. She has been highly successful in the AQHA industry in the Horsemanship and All-Around events. Schmidt has placed among the top percentage of her peers in Horsemanship at the AQHA World Championship Show, the Georgia Big A and many other major equestrian show circuits.
Schmidt is a member of her high school’s student council, RSVP, Best Buddies special needs club and serves as a student ambassador. In addition to riding, Schmidt donates much of her time volunteering with food drives, the Iowa Children’s Hospital and the House of Hope fundraising event.
“We are thrilled to have Heather joined the University of Georgia equestrian team in 2012,” Meneely added. “We are looking forward to her tremendous skill and outstanding positive attitude that she will bring to the team.”
