ATHENS, Ga. – Junior Maria Salazar joined freshman Morgan Justiss as a title winner at the 44th All American Quarter Horse Congress at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, Ohio. Salazar was named the champion in hunter under saddle, outscoring 211 competitors and also won the reserve championship in showmanship. Salazar finished third in hunt seat equitation on Wednesday and will compete in horsemanship later today.
“Maria is a fabulous individual whom is extremely talented and continues to be a consistent winner in the show arena here at the University of Georgia and in the Quarter Horse and Paint Horse industry competitions,” assistant coach Mary Meneely said.
Salazar is enjoying a successful season for the Bulldogs, picking up winning rides against No. 7 Kansas State and No. 4 Texas Christian last weekend. The Portland, Ore., native also rode to a tie against second-ranked Texas A&M earlier this season.
Also competing at Congress is a two-time AQHYA World Champion Gillian Chant. Chant finished third in trail and sixth in both horsemanship and equitation.
The trio and the rest of the Georgia equestrian team will return to action on Nov. 4 when it takes on South Carolina in Blythewood, S.C.
