ATHENS, Ga. - The top-ranked Georgia equestrian team travels to Blythewood, S.C., on Friday, Oct. 11 to face the No. 3 South Carolina Gamecocks at 2 p.m. Georgia enters the competition with a 1-0 record, while South Carolina stands at 4-0 this season. This is the Southeastern Conference opener for both teams.
“We had some phenomenal performances in the meet against Fresno State,” Head Coach Meghan Boenig said. “I think it showed that our riders were well prepared and knew what they needed to do to get the job done. South Carolina is an incredibly talented team and we are excited for this test. This is a tremendous rivalry between two teams that have a lot of respect for each other. We know that we will have to bring our A-game and ride virtually mistake free in order to come out with the win.”
The Bulldogs are coming off of an impressive 17-3 win over Fresno State in their season opener. In the win over FSU, Georgia took home all four MOP honors: Rachel Kolb (Horsemanship), McKenzie Lantz (Reining), Megan Southam (Equitation Over Fences), and Leylan Gleeson (Equitaiton on the Flat). After beginning the meet with a decisive 5-0 sweep in Fences, Georgia rode to a 4-1 lead in both Horsemanship and Flat. Georgia’s Reining squad ended the day going 3-0-1, highlighted by an MOP ride by Lantz.
Georgia and South Carolina split two meetings during the regular season last year. South Carolina took the first meeting 11-8 before the Bulldogs came away with an 11-8 win in the final meeting during the regular season. Georgia and South Carolina also faced off in the Southeastern Conference Championship, with USC taking a 10-7 win.
