ATHENS, Ga. - Members of the Georgia equestrian team took time out of their busy schedules and volunteered at the Northeast Georgia Food Bank on Monday evening.
"It was amazing to see what a little team work and effort could produce," Selby Merritt said. "Seeing how much of a difference we all can make when working together is the most rewarding experience you could ask for."
The volunteers sorting through donated food ideas, checking expiration dates and sorting food into nearly 100 boxes to give back to Athens-Clarke County community. The food bank recently achieved a goal of distributing over one million pounds of food in the month of August alone. The Northeast Georgia Food Bank, with the help of volunteers, distributes nearly 20,000 meals per day
"It's always a rewarding experience to be able to go and help out in the community with your teammates," Maria Salazar added. "It's a good reminder of how blessed and fortunate we all are, which sometimes we forget with our hectic schedules."
Among the riders who volunteered were Julia Hemingway, Emily van der Walde, Megan Yeager, Jenny Freeman, Melanie Carraway, Michelina Carbone, Audrey Gallagher, McKenzie Lantz, Becca Haaland, Sara Parr, Morgan Beavers, Erica Webb, Merritt and Salazar.
