ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Georgia equestrian team was well represented at the NRHA National Collegiate Reining Derby last weekend in Oklahoma City, Okla., with Lauren Tieche being named the Reserve Champion and McKenzie Lantz finishing sixth.
Tieche took home the Reserve Championship with a score of 213.5, while Lantz finished with a score of 210.5. Sami Belcher and incoming freshman Michelina Carbone also competed at the derby, posting excellent scores in their respective classes.
“I was very proud of the girls and their ability to take the reins of an unknown horse and produce excellent rides,” assistant coach Mary Meneely said. “Both athletes came up with a plan and executed it well. I am extremely excited about our 2012-2013 team and look forward to continued success from these ladies!”
The riders were selected to compete at the Derby based upon several criteria: season-long stats, performance at the National Collegiate Equestrian Association Championships and comments from judges at the NCEA meet. The meet included 12 riders representing the NCEA, the NRHA and the IHSA.
