ATHENS, Ga.- The Georgia equestrian team has earned the No. 3 seed for the 2014 NCEA National Championship. The Bulldogs went 9-3 during the regular season including a 4-2 mark in the Southeastern Conference. After postseason competition, the Bulldogs will enter the national championship with a 10-4 overall record and a 5-3 record in the SEC. The NCEA National Championship will take place April 17-19 in Waco, Texas.
After a first place ranking in the preseason poll, the Bulldogs began their 2013-2014 campaign with a dominating 17-3 decision over Fresno State. Georgia then picked up a pair of conference wins, defeating South Carolina on the road and A&M at the UGA Equestrian Complex.
The first setback for Georgia came when the Bulldogs visited the Auburn Tigers and dropped a 12-8 decision. Georgia then traveled to Kansas State and suffered its second loss of the season, before bouncing back with an 11-6 victory in Fort Worth, Texas over Texas Christian to conclude the fall schedule.
Georgia opened the spring schedule in a double-meet weekend, picking up wins over both Tennessee-Martin and Delaware State. The Bulldogs then faced the Texas A&M Aggies for the second time this season in College Station, Texas coming away with a 10-9 victory. Georgia then dropped a narrow 10-9 decision to South Carolina before handing Auburn an 11-8 loss. The Bulldogs concluded their regular season competition against New Mexico State, outscoring the Aggies 17-3.
The Bulldogs went 1-1 at the Southeastern Conference Championships March 28-29 held in Blythewood, S.C. Entering the weekend as the No. 2 seed, Georgia defeated third-seeded Auburn 12-8 in the semifinal round of competition. With the win, Georgia grabbed two MOP honors by Liza Finsness (Equitation Over Fences) and Sara Parr (Horsemanship). In the match-up against South Carolina for the championship, Georgia fell short in raw score after tying with the Gamecocks in points 10-10. Despite the outcome, the Bulldogs earned two MOP awards after McKenzie Lantz (Reining) and Meg O’Mara (Equitation Over Fences) each took home honors.
