ATHENS, Ga.- University of Georgia equestrian team member Abby O’Mara has been selected to participate in the Fifth Annual Collegiate Equitation Challenge as part of the Winter Equestrian Festival in Wellington, Fla. The finals of the event will be held the evening of Friday, Feb. 7.
The Rumson, N.J., native enters the WEF Challenge with a 6-3 record in Equitation Over Fences, with her season-best score of 90 coming in a win against Texas A&M. She also has posted wins over Fresno State, Texas Christian, Kansas State, UT-Martin, and Delaware State. O’Mara has earned three MOPs including back-to-back honors against DSU and UT-Martin, posting a score of 85 in both meets.
The competition will feature 16 NCEA and IHSA riders in a head to head competition over fences. WEF is the world's largest and longest running equestrian competition. The 12-week event hosts more than 5,000 horses from 50 states and 31 countries and is held at the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center.
Riders will compete over an equitation course with heights up to 3'6". The eight winners will qualify for the finals in the evening, and the remaining eight will compete in a consolation bracket immediately following the Preliminary Round. The horses are provided by private individuals for the competition and are randomly drawn.
