No. 2 Georgia Hosts No. 7 South Carolina on Saturday
Feb. 2, 2012 ATHENS, Ga. - The second-ranked University of Georgia equestrian team resumes its season on Saturday when it welcomes No. 7 South Carolina to Bishop, Ga. The Bulldogs enter the matchup with a 6-1 record on the year, including an 11-9 win over the Gamecocks earlier this season. South Carolina is 3-4 on the year. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., and admission is free. "We are really excited to start our spring at home with a very talented South Carolina team," head coach Meghan Boenig said. "They got back into the action a little earlier than us, having competed against Oklahoma State last weekend. They had a very difficult test then and I know that they will be prepared for us this weekend. We are more than up to challenge that South Carolina presents. Our riders have been riding very well during practice and have continued to learn a lot. I am very excited to see this team produce in the way that I know they can this weekend." Georgia's hunt seat team, which is 10-3-1 on the year, is led by junior Carly Anthony, who is undefeated this season with a record of 13-0. The Redmond, Wash., native has eight MVPs to her name, including a pair of MVP honors in Georgia's win over South Carolina in the fall. Anthony has swept hunt seat MVP honors in two competitions this year. The western team owns an 8-3-2 record with nine MVP honors. In horsemanship, Megan Hawkins leads the way with a 6-1 record and two MVP rides, including one against South Carolina. Becca Haaland owns a 6-2 record in reining with a season and team-best score of 78.5, which came against TCU. In Georgia's earlier meeting with the Gamecocks, the Bulldogs used a pair of MVP rides from Anthony and Hawkins to guide its way to the win. The teams went back in forth early, with each posting winnings rides. With the score knotted at seven, the competition came down to reining. After trailing 1-0 in the event, the Bulldogs rallied to score the next three points to seal Georgia's third-straight win over a ranked opponent. Samantha Belcher put the meet away for Georgia with a 65-63 win. Live scoring will be available at www.georgiadogs.com Lineup Equitation on the Flat Horsemanship Reining |
