Jan. 22, 2014

ATHENS, Ga. --- The sixth-ranked Georgia equestrian team will begin the spring portion of the season this weekend when it travels to Martin, Tenn. The Bulldogs will take on both the UT-Martin and Delaware State in a two-day competition, beginning on Friday, Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. ET against Delaware State. Competition will conclude Saturday, Jan. 25 at 11 a.m., when the Bulldogs take on UT-Martin.

"We are so excited to get back in action this weekend on the road against two very talented teams in UT-Martin and Delaware State," Head Coach Meghan Boenig said. "The ladies came back from the break very excited and motivated and did a lot of homework to improve their riding and skills. We are motivated to lay out consistent courses and patterns and I am excited to see the hard work pay off this weekend."

During the fall season, the Bulldogs rode to three straight wins against Fresno State, South Carolina and Texas A&M before falling to Auburn and Kansas State. The Bulldogs bounced back and used an 11-6 win against Texas Christian University to conclude the fall schedule with a 4-2 record that included a 2-1 mark in Southeastern Conference action.

Highlighting the fall season were sophomore Heather Schmidt and freshman Liza Finsness. Schmidt accumulated four MOPs and finished the fall schedule with a perfect 6-0 record in Horsemanship. She was named both the SEC and NCEA Horsemanship Rider of the Month for the month of November, averaging a score of 74 and defeating her opponents by an average of three points.

Finsness rode to a 5-1 record and an impressive four MOPs earned her SEC Rider of the Month in Equitation on the Flat in both October and November. She joined Schmidt in being named NCEA National Rider of the Month in Flat in November with an average of 84.3. Finsness also picked up three MOPs in Equitation over Fences.

Georgia remained atop the coach's poll for eight weeks straight, before the loss to second-ranked Auburn bumped the Bulldogs to fourth. Georgia dropped two more spots at the conclusion of the fall schedule and will begin the spring schedule ranked sixth.
